The 2nd South Lancashire battalion of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division was one of the units that moved north to Ypres following the end of the Battle of La Bassée in which they had seen action during October, 1914. They moved to Merris on 31st October then on to Locre on the next day. On 5th November 2nd South Lancashire moved into reserve positions near Hooge and on 7th November took over part of the front line there. By 17th November, 1914, they had moved back into Brigade reserve trenches in a nearby wood, but still under heavy artillery fire, when at 8am a large shell landed in a dug out occupied by the battalion commander and another officer, Bernard Fulcher. Both men were killed. |
